Monitors come with a wall of specifications, most of which the shop will not explain. Here is what genuinely matters, depending on what you use the computer for.
Bigger is not always better if the resolution does not keep up. A 27-inch screen at 1440p is a sweet spot for most people, sharp and roomy without needing a powerful computer to drive it. For everyday work, a 24-inch 1080p is perfectly fine and cheap.
Measured in hertz, this is how many times a second the screen updates. For browsing and office work, 60Hz is fine. For gaming, a higher refresh rate like 144Hz makes fast motion look far smoother.
IPS panels give the best colour and viewing angles, which suits most people and anyone doing photo or design work. VA panels have deeper contrast, and TN panels are cheap and fast but look washed out. For most homes, IPS is the safe choice.
Check the monitor has the connection your computer uses, HDMI or DisplayPort, and enough of them if you want to plug in more than one device.
